Soft on the Devil

Soft on the Devil

*This book was gifted to me by the author. The below review is my honest opinion*

This is a 'mystery novella' and was quite a short, easy read. Our main character, Ian, is a religious young man whose neighbor went missing. God has given him visions of Cindy (missing neighbor) and he takes it upon himself to solve the mystery of her murder after her body is found.

Here's one that got a lot of hype. One of everyone's favorite stories, Cinderella, that has plenty of re-tellings. Except, in this futuristic setting, Cinder is a cyborg.

more like 3.5

I've always avoided reading Stephen King. Since I was little, all I could think about when I heard his name was 'It' or 'Carrie' or anything horrific that would have given me nightmares. You see, I like dark books, but I do not enjoy horror. I don't like being scared, at all and nightmares come easily to me. However, my sister is a big fan and lent this to me so I could experience the most non-horror King I could get.

I really wanted to love this, but I figured out most of it about halfway through and that just kind of ruined it for me. I love the idea behind it, it was just too obvious for me.

This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling with some Greek Mythology in the mix.

"If it were you--if you were so wrong about something and it wound up hurting someone, wouldn't you do anything to make it right?"

This book is the perfect amount of messed up.

I would classify this more as a whodunit than anything else, but it definitely has a psychological thriller feel as well.

I definitely was not expecting the darkness that came out of this book, which made me love it even more.

My brain is on fire from all of the action and information I just absorbed from this book. It definitely had a secret agent/James Bond thing going and I actually think the plot would make an even better movie. Keep in mind that this book can be read as a standalone, which is what I have done but it's actually the second book in the Guardian Novel series and with the way the book left off, there will be more to come.

I am so torn! I desperately wanted to give this a better rating, because I sincerely enjoyed the first 75% of the book and plowed through it. It really kept me guessing and had such an eerie atmosphere that I loved. But, sadly, towards the end it just lost its hold on me.

I don't want the 3 star rating to make it seem like I didn't enjoy this, because I did.

I really don't know why I bothered. I haven't had any good experiences with 'contemporary', but I just kept hearing so many good things about this author so I decided to try it. Clearly, I fail at seeing the good in this genre.

I've heard so many great things about this series, and I completely understand why. It may seem like one of the many recycled plots: girl discovers she has powers and tries to save the world blablabla, but this is so much more than this (at least I thought so). The idea behind the world was very creative.

Even though I wasn't a huge fan of the book in general, I do have to admit that it made me think.

Oh no! I never thought after reading the first book in this series that I would give any of Diana Gabaldon's writing less than three starts, but this was just painful. I mean, you know it's bad when it takes me about a month to finish a book (even if it is almost 1000 pages). However, I will be continuing the series. I just can't help but love the descriptive writing, even if the plot gets boring and the books have pacing issues. Also, I received one of the later books in the series for Christmas, so I guess I have to at least reach that one.
