The Last Star

The Last Star

Rick Yancey

I liked the 5th wave. I thought that it was pretty original and I got into it; I really liked Cassie's character and felt like she wasn't like all of the other lead female characters that I had read about. Then, the fandom hit. I understand being really excited about a book and wanting to tell everyone and anyone about how much you love it or about the characters and really just think about the plot and concept of the stories constantly, but some of these fans take it a little too far. Suddenly, it's all we hear about and then there's movies that come out with pretty big Hollywood actors and actresses and then that's the only book that the entire YA community knows about and it's basically an instant cult classic.

*end rant... for now*

I usually read these books to see what the hype is about... sometimes I agree that the book is the best thing ever! (hey, HP) and sometimes I end up completely hating the books and wondering why it's getting so much attention (sorry, Twilight fans). In this case, I'm torn. I loved The Fifth Wave, kind of hated The Infinite Sea, and liked The Last Star, but not enough to feel that my sole purpose in life is to tell everyone how great the book is. So, here's my review.

Before I start about the ending of this series, let me start by saying that I wasn't a huge fan. I read the Selection trilogy in a short amount of time because they were light easy reads, but I didn't think that they were anything special. However, when I got to The Heir, I hated it. Could not stand it. So, why continue to read the series? Well, this book is supposedly the last one and I had to finish what I started. Also, I heard that it was a decent ending to a not-so-great series, and I wanted to see for myself. Now, onto the book.

I'll give this book credit, I haven't read anything like it lately. I definitely fought with myself throughout reading about whether I liked it or not, and in the end I decided that it was passable... not quite good but not bad either. I was a bit impartial and still a little undecided but I do think that I'll be randomly drawn to reminiscing over parts of this story. The setting is a mixture of an epidemic and a reality TV show filming in the same time period.

I've been on a kind of murder mystery/missing persons kick when it comes to books, and a lot have also been coming out recently so I figured this book would just be another version of something I've read before. I was wrong. This book is by no means a murder mystery or any type of 'thriller', it's much more character development and a story to tell about family values more than anything. I think the fact that I was going into this book thinking it was something it was not was the reason that I really didn't care for it, but if I hadn't known we were trying to find someone without that being the focus of the book, I may have enjoyed it a lot more. Don't let this discourage you from something you may enjoy reading, it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be and that kinda killed my expectations and thought process throughout the book.

"You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style."

You've got that right, Humbert.
